Regeneration in Margate
The prospect of an international art gallery has already made a significant difference to the regeneration of Margate and East Kent. The Margate Renewal Partnership has been established to lead and co-ordinate the wider regeneration and transformation of Margate. It is a partnership of key agencies and stakeholders including, amongst others: Kent County Council; Thanet District Council; Arts Council England; South East England Development Agency; English Partnerships and the Government Office for the South East that all have a critical role to play in the 're-birth' of Margate. The Partnership is an ambassador and champion, influencing government, bringing in new resources and attracting investors.
The vision is to create a vibrant and successful town that provides a mixture of the traditional Margate seaside offer alongside revitalised areas that will create modern retail, and new lifestyle and creative quarters. Turner Contemporary is central to this vision.
Margate Old Town will be the heart of the creative quarter. It will complement and extend the main town centre creating a distinct and vibrant area offering independent, and specialist retailing, a variety of quality food and drink and creative and cultural businesses. The area is home to galleries, art workspaces, residential studios and new commercial facilities such as the former Lloyds Bank building that is now the Margate Media Centre which provides accommodation and facilities for creative businesses.
Most importantly, regeneration will transform the lives of local people, providing new jobs, new facilities and lasting benefits.
