Turner Contemporary, Stour Valley Arts and Canterbury City Council's Museums and Galleries Service are collaborating on a training and research project exploring how artists can work with disadvantaged children and young people facing challenges in their lives.

 

 

 

In March 2010 selected artists were given two days training at Whitstable Museum exploring neuro-chemistry, working with challenging behaviour and the role of arts in processing trauma.  We were delighted that artists and a psychologist from Kids Company could lead some of the training, sharing their learning and expertise in how art can help children cope with trauma. Colleagues from Local Children Services Partnerships attended the training too, ensuring that we develop creative partnership projects that address the real needs of children in Thanet, Canterbury and Ashford. Artists who trained on the project will begin to work directly with children and young people in May and June. This project is funded by Enquire.

 

Turner Contemporary, Stour Valley Arts and Canterbury City Council's Museums and Galleries Service are at an exciting stage in their development. We have been working together for several years to develop ambitious education projects, create high quality resources and strengthen the cultural network in Kent. We want to make a difference to the arts in our county and need to work with artists to do this. We aim to develop a pool of artists who are excited by working with young people who are facing particular challenges in their lives. In the forest, by the sea and in the city, our organisations offer huge potential for engaging young people.

About Kids Company:
Kids Company was founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996. They provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children.

Their services reach 14,000 children across London, including the most deprived and at risk whose parents are unable to care for them due to their own practical and emotional challenges. For many, the roles of adult and child are reversed and, despite profound love, both struggle to survive.


Kids Company provide a safe, caring, family environment where support is tailored to the needs of each individual.  They deliver their services through four street level centres and across 38 London schools. Their services and support empower children who have experienced enormous challenges to lead positive and fulfilling lives.
